Substance Misuse Research Nurse

Change Grow Live – Sunderland
Fixed Term: 30 months | Full Time (37.5 hours per week)

At Change Grow Live, we believe that everyone has the potential to change the direction of their life. As a national charity, we combine compassion with evidence to deliver high-quality, person-centred care that improves outcomes for individuals, families and communities.

Our values — Be Open, Be Compassionate and Be Bold — guide everything we do. They shape safe, respectful environments where people are treated as individuals and supported to access the right treatment and care at the right time.

Our Nurses are integral to Change Grow Live’s approach to helping people change their lives. Working within multidisciplinary teams, they provide specialist clinical interventions that support recovery, reduce harm and improve physical and mental wellbeing.

We are now offering an exciting opportunity for a Substance Misuse Research Nurse to join our Sunderland service. This is a split role, combining frontline clinical practice with involvement in a nationally significant research study:

  • 3 days per week supporting delivery of the In-BOAT clinical trial

  • 2 days per week working as a Substance Misuse Nurse across the Sunderland service

This role offers a rare opportunity to contribute directly to both evidence generation and clinical practice, helping to shape how substance misuse services are delivered now and in the future.

Responsibilities

Research Nurse – In-BOAT Clinical Trial

Alongside your clinical role, you will support delivery of the In-BOAT randomised controlled trial, working under the supervision of the Clinical and Research Teams and in collaboration with:

  • The Centre for Healthcare Randomised Trials (CHaRT)

  • University of Stirling

  • University of Aberdeen

  • Local contracted drug treatment services

The study focuses on adults receiving Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid dependence who also have a co-existing benzodiazepine use disorder. It compares a tailored diazepam maintenance intervention with standard tapering care, evaluating which approach is most effective in reducing illicit (“street”) benzodiazepine use.

You will contribute to:

  • Participant recruitment, consent and engagement

  • Delivery of trial-related clinical and psychosocial interventions

  • Collection of high-quality research data in line with UK Clinical Trials Regulations, ICH-GCP, and study protocols

  • Safe collection, processing and handling of biological samples

  • Ongoing liaison with research teams, investigators, pharmacies and GPs

  • Ensuring participant safety, dignity and high standards of care across both trial arms

This role places you at the forefront of research-informed practice, directly contributing to the national evidence base for substance misuse treatment.
